Die kleine "Schuhhauptstadt" Portugals: Felgueiras

The small "shoe capital" of Portugal: Felgueiras

Felgueiras is located in northern Portugal, in a region known for its traditional shoemaking. When I first visited here, I was immediately impressed by the atmosphere – no large factories, no noise, just quiet, focused work in small workshops. Exactly how I imagined RŌSHI shoes would be made.

Today, I have my shoes made in a small, family-run workshop in Felgueiras—now in its second generation, with the entire family and a team of just ten experienced artisans. Here, production isn't done to produce as much as possible in a short time, but with dedication, skill, and a genuine sense of quality. Most models are made using the original Goodyear Welted construction—a complex, repair-friendly construction that lasts for many years. Other traditional constructions are also implemented here with the same care.

At my side is Hugo Melo, a friend and partner who grew up in Felgueiras and has been familiar with the industry since childhood. As the son of one of Portugal's most prominent former shoe manufacturers, he brings not only an impressive network but also a keen sense of form, material, and craftsmanship. Together, we develop each idea further, deciding on materials, proportions, and details – directly on site, with short lines of communication and open discussions.

What I particularly appreciate about Felgueiras is the proximity. Not only to the people I work with here, but also to the materials. Many leathers and fabrics come from Portugal or the surrounding European countries. This ensures transparency, sustainability, and a clear overview of every step of production.

For me, Felgueiras is more than a production site. It's a place where my ideas become tangible – with genuine craftsmanship, honest exchange, and the ambition to create something lasting.
